nature appreciation centre
In the process of designing the Nature Appreciation Centre (NAC), meticulous thoughts on fully utilizing the potential of its context is essential.
Being aware that the NAC is located at the tip of banding island, it suffers a lack of continuity. An NAC is not a destination but merely a stop, a stop to learn and appreciate, hence the continuity of a journey is very important in this case. To address such a challenge, a u-turn symbol was used as a raw reference and the layout and orientation slowly develops from there, all in favour of redirecting the visitors back into the woods; for the visitors to continue their adventures.
design concept
An NAC is not worthy of being called an NAC if it cannot deliver its most basic objective, which is to help visitors understand and learn to appreciate mother nature. In my take, embracing the contrast of the site was of utmost priority. Knowing that the site has two contrasting views (a view disrupted by construction and a view that is utterly peaceful and breathtaking). the NAC was designed to carefully control the viewing experience on the visitor in order to trigger poetic responces. Layering and hierarchy of the contour has also been taken advantage of by submerging part of the building to enhance the sense of contrast when viewed from above. Nonetheless, the building completes its task by helping visitors understand and appreciate nature with exhibitons and poetic encounters.
One of the most interesting encounters will be visitors being able to look back into the indoor exhibition area from the outdoor refreshment deck. Viewing from the deck, the beautiful exhibitions are being framed in bars (prison reference). This is to hopefully help visitors to realize and trigger them to reflect on the misconception of perserving and imprisoning. Should nature be protected but protected behind bars? Or should it take the chance of spreading its beauty and allow more people to value and appreciate nature?
All in all, this NAC is designed to serve not just a place for people to appreciate nature but to act as a reminder to all, a wake up call. Encouraging people to take a step back to think, a step back into mothernature. both literally and figuritively.
