DESIGN STUDIO 5

urban infill market
The design of the building is to consist of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioural patterns as discerned and analysed in the Preliminary Studies.Apart from developing an appropriate formal and elevational strategy in response to the character of the street, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs for an urban market-place. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.
design concept
Chow Kit has long been deemed unpopular by the masses due to its infamous red light district and ever increasing poverty. Located in between the Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle and Titiwangsa, it is a shame for Chow Kit to have ended up in such a state when it is actually blessed with a very strategic site location. With an in depth site analysis and thorough research, Chow Kit was found to be largely populated with Indonesians whom are either foreign immigrants or permanent resident. As the locals of the town, they were not in charge of making their home a better place.
After our effort in analysing and understanding the site, the businesses along the main street of Chow Kit was found to be monopolised. Many shoplots were actually being taken care by one owner. When a foreigner were to walk along the street to shop for goods, one would think that one is seeking for a fair trade but secretly behind doors, all businesses will link back to one single owner, and with that said, the owner could single-handedly control the price fluctuation of a particular goods. The locals do not stand a chance against big profit-minded investors like these and Chow Kit is doomed to have its poverty rate sky rocketing if things stayed nonchalant. Chow Kit was blessed with a rich cultural background and a very strategic location, but based on the current state Chow Kit is in, it can easily be seen as a rich land that is governed by irresponsible politicians. Therefore, in my attempt to resolve, or at least initiate a fighting chance, my building design aims to TRULY UNFOLD THE BEAUTY OF CHOW KIT STREET. In short, it’s a market for the locals, by the locals.
ps: Kindly go through Concept Development and Design Response sections to understand how the Beauty of Chow Kit Street was unfolded; how a market for the community, by the community was created.
